Guatemalan and international human rights organizations condemn the murder of Emilia Quan Stackmaann, a sociologist who worked with CEDFOG, the Research and Documentation Centre of the Western Border of Guatemala.
At 6:20 am on December 7, the CEDFOG vehicle was intercepted by armed men who kidnapped Emilia and the driver of the vehicle, Víctor López, who was later found beaten and gagged. The next day the Emilia’s body was found in the municipality of Todos Santos Cuchumatán.
Unfortunately, the actions taken during the first 24 hours after the events failed to bear fruit. They have also generated more frustration among the communities and organizations. For this reason, the Convergence for Human Rights (Convergencia por los Derechos Humanos) urges the authorities of the State of Guatemala to:
1. Carry out a thorough investigation to find those responsible for the murder of Emilia and to clarify the facts surrounding her murder.
2. Ensure effective criminal investigation of the facts and of every possible scenario of what happened.
3. Ensure the safety of human rights and of social organizations committed to development, security and justice in Huehuetenango.
