The democratic Republic of Congo plays an important role as regards the marketing of minerals in the world. In spite of the numerous conflicts existing in the Congolese regions, the multinational mining companies continue their activities of buying minerals from the war zone there by supplying them the crucial fuel for the violence.
The co-author Noel Atama, Enough’s Congo-based field researcher said that: “The pursuit of mineral resources by armed groups on all sides of the conflict accelerated during 2009. But unprecedented levels of international attention, including legislation pending in the United States, has also upped the pressure to clean up the trade, spurring action from the Congolese government and the private sector.”
