ENVIRONMENTAL Campaigner Threatened

On December 11th, 2009, activists of Food and agriculture organization (FAO) opponents of the activities of a company of extraction in Cerro San Pedro were brutally attacked and threatened by a group of persons who were in favor of the mine. They were gathered to welcome the delegation of Mexican federal members of parliament.

Following the confrontation, Armando Mendoza Ponce one of the FAO activists and an environmental campaigner in Mexico, a 65-year-old, was threatened with death and the others campaigners had stones thrown at them while they prepared for a visit by Mexican parliamentarians in the village of Cerro San Pedro, San Luis Potosi State. In Cerro San Pedro the activists are always in danger because they are isolated and receive no protection from the local police.
